Ranitomeya summersi

Ranitomeya summersi
Scientific name: Ranitomeya summersi, formerly Dendrobates fantasticus

Common name: none

Distribution: Huallaga Canyon, Peru

Favoured terrain: This species enjoys the safety of plants like Dieffenbachia, often sitting in the leaf axils. But it is also perfectly happy in Bromeliads or hopping around the forest floor, It is not an especially shy frog, and makes a good species for a suitably planted terrarium.

Dificulty: Easy to maintain in captivity, though breeding may be more problematic.

Notes: An attractive black and gold frog. Members of the genus Ranitomeya were previously known as the ventrimaculatas group; thumbnail frogs from the Amazon basin. Ranitomeya summersi was previously considered a colour morph of Dendrobates fantasticus, which is perhaps surprising as they are very different looking frogs.
